Why Fats Are Bad For You
Food is any material consumed to supply nutrition to an organism. In simple terms, food is the food that supports an organisms’ growth and maintenance. Food is generally of animal, plant or microbial origin, and usually contains vital nutrients, including vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and minerals. It is used by the body to increase metabolism and energy supply. A wide variety of food is consumed by man throughout his lifetime.
There are three major groups of food: carbohydrate, protein and fat. Carbohydrate provides the main source of energy for most of the day; protein is responsible for building and repairing muscle tissue; and fat tissue repair and stores nutrients. The typical American diet, which includes over 60% of calories as carbohydrate, provides almost all of the calories needed by the body throughout the day. Protein and fat are not the only sources of calories, however.
Most fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, nuts, and seeds are carbohydrates. Milk products, cereals, bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, tomatoes, ketchup, pizza sauce, ice cream, and cookies are sources of carbohydrates. Some vegetable oils, fruits, and other foods also are main sources of carbohydrates. Almost all of the food manufactured in the United States, in the form of hamburger, hot dogs, spaghetti, potato chips, and cookies are carbohydrate-rich. Sugar is the most refined carbohydrate, in terms of calories, and provides little nutrition.

Most scientists agree that a healthy diet is based on a combination of carbohydrates with some protein, fat, and some minerals. In a recent study session, students were asked to complete food frequency questionnaires for a study session that compared the effects of a balanced diet and a carbohydrate-rich meal. The study concluded that a low-carbohydrate meal had a greater impact on blood sugar than a balanced diet.
Food, nutrition, and the food industry continue to lobby against lower carbohydrate consumption, claiming that low-carb diets will lead to health issues, such as increased hunger and overeating. However, most experts agree that adopting such a diet is not beneficial. Many foods, such as sugar, contain nutrients that are essential to human health. There are some nutrients that are difficult to digest. Other nutrients, which are not digested completely, are not stored as easily. These nutrients are stored as fat in our bodies.
Some fats are more fattening than others. Saturated fats are known to raise cholesterol levels and increase the risk of heart disease. Trans-fats are made from hydrogen and are not clear at all what the trans-chain fatty acids are or how they affect the human body. Polyunsaturated fats are found in nuts, seeds, fish, olives, and olive oil. These fats are not fattening because they help to maintain the human heart’s health.
